Viking Christmas? Yeah, it's a thing!
Did you know that the traditions we associate with Christmas – feasting, decorations, even the Yule log – have roots in ancient Viking celebrations?
The Vikings celebrated a midwinter festival called Yule (pronounced “Yol”, just like the modern Norwegian Jul) around the winter solstice, and their 12 days of revelry feels like the perfect inspiration for a wild, unforgettable office Christmas party.
What is Viking Yule?
- The Vikings marked the Winter Solstice (the longest night of the year) with feasting, drinking, music, games, and sacrifices, honouring both their gods and their ancestors.
- They believed Odin would ride through the sky on his eight-legged horse, Sleipnir, visiting homes. Kids would leave out hay and candy in shoes by the hearth. (Sound familiar?)
- Their “Yule tree” was decorated not with baubles, but with food, clothing, and even small figurines of Norse gods.
- One of their most dramatic customs was the Yule wreath – a giant wheel of evergreen that they set on fire and rolled down hills, symbolising the return of sunlight.
- They also had the Yule log: a large oak log inscribed with runes for protection and burned through the festival, with a piece saved for the next year.
- Mistletoe had special meaning too: in Norse myth, Balder was killed by mistletoe and resurrected, so the plant came to represent hope and rebirth.
- And yes – the Yule Goat! A very Viking symbol, tied to Thor’s magical goats. Over time, that evolved into the decorative straw goats seen in Scandinavian Christmas traditions.
